On Monday March 5, Principal Dr. Cartier announced that seniors Dena Lombardo and Colette Lichtenstein were the official winners and recipients of  $10,000 as part of the 2018 Horatio Alger State Scholarship Program.

This program is one of the nation’s largest scholarship programs in the country.  As stated on the Horatio Alger Association Website, the program was created to “specifically assist high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives.  The Horatio Alger Association seeks students who have exhibited determination, integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.”

The scholarships are funded by Horatio Alger Members who have also experienced challenges in their lives, but are now successful business and civic leaders.

Senior Dena Lombardo wants her peers, and all high school students, to know that “winning scholarships is not impossible.”

Ms. Lombardo stated that she had been eagerly awaiting the posting of the State Scholars.  In January, the organization postponed the postings and did so again the following month.  Dena was filled with a rush of excitement, shock and disbelief when she checked the website in March to find her name listed alongside the name of her good friend Colette.

When asked what advice she had to offer other students, Dena stated, “All I can say is apply; make the effort to win the scholarship, prove why you are diverse, and show that you want it!”
