Being an owner of a tablet myself, I am an advocate of alternative computer use in school. Small and light, tablets are always ready to use and provide applications useful to any class. Students can take notes easily and expediently or record a lecture for use at home and further studying. Applications can also be downloaded such as practice tests or flashcards for individual subjects.
The convenience of tablets also contribute to the rapid increase of usage within the last year. All tablets have calendars and planners which help students stay on top of school work, tests, quizzes and project due dates. Not only does this allow for grade improvements, but it also leaves room for advance in terms of school work. Lighter than a notebook, tablets store all information, without the bulk of binders or the detriment to the environment that standard work requires.
Having the privilege of discussing alternative computer use with Dr. George, an advocate as well, he intimated that tablets would soon be available for all courses and subjects of study. He also remarked on their convenience, most likely owning one himself, and their compatibility with curriculums throughout the district.
Although the transition of technology at our school is off to a slow start, it is necessary that their benefit to students be highlighted, for soon alternative computers will be an integral part of Middletown High School North.
