Senior pitcher Zachary Hampton delivered a clutch performance on both the mound and at the plate, leading eighth-seeded Middletown North to a 4-2 victory over ninth-seeded Summit in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Playoffs on Tuesday afternoon.
Hampton pitched a complete game to power the Lions past the Hilltoppers in front of a home crowd in Middletown. The game remained scoreless through six innings before Middletown North broke through in the bottom of the seventh, plating four runs and holding off a late push by Summit to seal the win.
Hampton threw 97 pitches over seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and two walks while striking out six. His effort on the mound anchored the Lions’ playoff opener, showcasing poise and command under pressure.
At the plate, Hampton went 2-for-2 with a walk, a single, a double, a run scored, and one RBI, making him the game’s undisputed standout on both sides of the ball.
Middletown North’s offense ignited in the seventh inning, with contributions from James Morello (2-for-2, 1 run) and Ryan Clark (1-for-3). Despite trailing in hits early, the Lions capitalized on timely hitting and plate discipline to take advantage late.
With the win, Middletown North will look to build on the momentum of Hampton’s heroics as they prepare for their next postseason test against Colonia on Thursday May 29, 2025 in the NJSIAA Tournament, Quarterfinal Round, North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3.
