The Middletown North wrestling team is heading to the NJSIAA North 2, Group 4 finals after a pair of impressive victories on Monday.
The Lions (20-1) kicked off their sectional tournament run with a dominant 50-25 win over Westfield in the quarterfinals. Middletown North followed that up with a nail-biting semifinal victory, edging past Watchung Hills 34-32 in a highly competitive match.
In the quarterfinals against Westfield, Middletown North’s strong performance was highlighted by standout efforts, including a decisive pin by 175-pounder Daniel Benbrook, who defeated Simon Atileh in 1:20.
The Lions’ semifinal matchup against Watchung Hills was a back-and-forth affair. The team saw impressive wins, including Thomas Blewett (106 lbs), who earned a quick pin over Evan Frank in just 27 seconds, and Jacob Cinquegrana (113 lbs), who won a close 7-6 decision over Jacob Richardson. At 120 pounds, Jacob Portman also delivered a strong performance, winning 9-6 over Vincent Glynos.
In a thrilling 144-pound match, Justin Fearon secured a major decision (MD) victory, dominating Max Shaferman with a 10-0 score. Tyler Oden (138 lbs) also helped push the Lions ahead with a 5-2 decision over Michael Samayoa. The team also faced challenges, as 190-pound Artun Kirgezmis (Watchung Hills) defeated Bryon Hoffman with a technical fall, 19-4 in 4:00, and 215-pound Jake Carfaro pinned Jake Schettino in 2:51. However, Middletown North’s resilience and victories at key weights secured the win.
Middletown North will face North Hunterdon in the sectional final this Wednesday at home, with the opportunity to clinch the North 2, Group 4 title. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they look to extend their remarkable season.
