The Middletown North Lions Football Team extended their winning streak to two after their shutout against the Matawan Huskies on September 13th. Leading into this week two Shore Conference battle, the Middletown community was excited for this game which was ranked 9th in the top 12 games of the week by the Shore Savages. Going into the game, Middletown North was coming off with a hot win against Lacey last Friday, while Matawan was still looking for its first win of the 2024-2025 football season.
Owen Robson made his second start as the Lions quarterback, hoping to seal another win. However, the scoreboard didn’t see much action until the second quarter, when senior Shane Volante ran into a 2-yard touchdown to give the Lions the lead before the half. The score was 7-0 after a complete field goal by junior Jack Viola as they went into halftime.
Although, that was not the only touchdown Volante ran for. He extended the Lions’ lead in the third quarter with a 1-yard run into the endzone which made the score 14-0 after a completed kick by junior Jack Viola.
After the third quarter, the scoreboard didn’t see any more change. The Lions defensive line swarmed to the ball every play. The intensity and discipline the Lions defense showed has allowed them to be one of the best defenses in the Shore Conference to this point.
The all-around defense they left on the field really shows how much they have improved together. Defensive players who really gave it their all on the field Friday night were seniors, Michael Dwyer, Brody Tooker and T.J. Rey.
The Middletown North Lions blanked the Matawan Huskies as the Lions advance to 2-0 record on the 2024 season, while the Huskies fall to 0-3.
