On Saturday, May 4, Middletown High School North Junior pitcher Zach Hampton led the Lions (7-9) to an 11-0 victory over the Matawan Huskies (12-2) in the Monmouth County Baseball Tournament Quarterfinal matchup. The Lions who have been looking for consistency, came into Staurday’s contest against a very tough Matawan team.
This was Hampton’s third appearance on the mound in the last eight days, completing a four-hit shutout on only 84 pitches. The Lions offense cracked the scoring open in the fourth inning when seniors Jason Quardt and Dylan Briggs led the inning off with back to back singles.
Hampton was then hit by a pitch to to load the bases and junior Gabe Ahlemeyer drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. The Lions then capitalized on a pair of wild pitches to score the second run. Junior Mike Hallard hit a shallow single right field that dropped in for a two-run single and a 4-0 lead.
The win advances the Lions who will take on Red Bank Catholic this week. Hampton’s performance during Week 4 earned him the Shore Conference Week 4 Player of the Week. During the week 4 stretch, Hampton led the Lions to a 3-1 record including earning two victories on the mound. The junior allowed only one run in 12 innings, including a four-hit shutout against rival Middletown South. At the plate, Hamptonwas 7-for-12 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI in a four game span.
