On April 17, 2024 the defending champions of Middletown North entered Christian Brothers Academy’s track field intent on making history. With outstanding performances from all the boys who competed, Middletown North came out on top winning the title of A-North Division Champions.
Each athlete played a major role in the win with notable performances that really gave North that push to the top. Richard Welton, a runner and senior at MHSN, placed first in not one but two events. A time of 11.43 in the 100 and a 23.54 in the 200 put him at the top of the leaderboard. Welton’s wins contributed greatly to winning the title.
But that wasn’t all, the team could not have bought the title home without its field athletes. Another athlete in first place gave the North team a much needed push. Thomas Randolph, a senior and discus thrower, threw 158 ‘8 putting another North athlete at the top of the leaderboard.
When asked about his performance, Randolph said, “Wednesday I threw a discus and shot-put at the divisional championship meet. I ended up placing first in discus and earned the team a bunch of points to help us come away with our third straight division championship on the boys side. Being a division champ is something I take a lot of pride in. It is cool to be able to say we are the best in the division and I’ve been able to say that almost my entire time in high school. We have many more championship meets to look forward to and I hope the team has more wins in the future.”
This is his third championship of his high school career with his notable win in the 2023 division championships where he once again placed first.
Senior Ian Poole Morgan also played a major role in the win, securing a third place spot in javelin. With a throw of 143’9, he scored even more points for the team.
Many other North boys competed at championships and helped secure the win for Middletown North. Athletes Brian Novak, Dylan Polanco, Jack Viola and Jack Walsh competed as well and placed very high. When asked about his experience, sophomore and pole vaulter Dylan Polanco said, “Being division champs is important to me because it shows that we work hard and I am able to be a part of this team and legacy. Legacy is important to me because it gives me something to look up to and shows me that I can leave a mark on this program and gives me high standards and goals to achieve.” Polanco’s efforts and motivation to his teammates contributes to the legacy these boys leave behind.
Another sophomore at North, Jack Viola, was also asked about his experience. He said, “I did triple jump, long jump and ran the 100m at the A North Division Championship meet. Being public division champs is important not only to myself but also the entirety of our track and field program as it exemplifies our hard work and determination for greatness. We will continue our great efforts into the rest of the season.” Viola’s efforts to make this team great have been shown all season with his hard work and determination.
All of the boys that competed at CBA worked their hardest and in the end it all paid off. The weather was cold and rainy but the Lions did not let that get in the way of securing another win. Each and every one of these athletes prides themselves in their performance.
North Coach Brock Silvestri was asked about the championships. He said, “The boys’ team win was the third win in a row for the Public A-North title. The boys’ title came with a full team effort across all of the events. We had two close battles between Midd South and Marlboro. We beat South by five points and Marlboro by one point to clinch the title. This win took every athlete’s effort across the board in order to earn a great team victory to start off our spring season.”
With another win in the books, this program without a doubt will make it very far. With some of the best coaches and athletes, this team is one of the strongest teams in this division.
