Middletown High School North Lady Lions soccer goalie Maura Chawner has reached the 100-save milestone. The breakthrough came in a road game against Howell on Sept. 14. The junior took the field with 97 saves on the books and captured four more over the course of the contest to reach 101.
Chawner entered the 2021 season with 74 career saves. She recorded 22 saves in her freshman year when she played as varsity backup to Ellen Kasen. Kasen was an accomplished goalkeeper and a good source of technique pointers. Chawner took over the job last season and posted 52 saves.
The 100th save was met with a standing ovation by fans and players from both teams. Chawner later celebrated with team members amid signage, balloons and cheers. She was also presented with a flower bouquet.
“I’m so happy to play for Middletown High School North and get the opportunity to make 100 saves,” Chawner said. “Looking forward to making 100 more!”
It was also a good day for the Lions as they claimed their first win of the season via a 3-1 tally. Senior Tiffany Brickle and freshman Bri Gavini scored first-half unassisted goals to establish a 2-1 halftime advantage. Freshman Jayme Malanda put the contest on ice with a second half goal assisted by Brickle.
