MIDDLETOWN – The Science National Honor Society hosted a fun Halloween-themed activity for the Middletown North Lion Cubs Preschool program. The activity featured a variety of spooky demonstrations of simple science experiments.
The North Lion Cubs Preschool program is taught by Ms. Tully and high school students who sign up to take the Child Development course get to spend time with the preschoolers, plan fun and engaging lessons for them and even get to teach these lessons themselves.
The Science National Honor Society is an academic organization for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who have met high academic standards in their science courses. In order to be a member of the club, the students must acquire 6 hours of science-related community service each year.
On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the Science National Honor Society at High School North teamed up with the Child Development class and the Lion Cubs Preschool Program during blocks 2B and 6B to perform demonstrations of simple experiments with visual results, such as color changing liquids with bromothymol blue, titrations, and a fun trick involving a lit candle and baking soda and vinegar. The SNHS is led by advisor Mr. Draesel, President Vivian Oliver (12) and Vice President Jackie Fealy (12). The SNHS members dressed up as witches and the experiments were introduced to the preschoolers through the use of “potions”, which made the activity even more engaging for the youngsters.
President Vivian Oliver explained what happened during this activity to The Lion’s Roar. “By disguising more complex scientific principles, such as titrations and density levels, as fun interactive spells, we hoped to engage the preschoolers in the magic of science.”
It seems as though the preschoolers had a fun-filled day and will be looking forward to their upcoming activities with MHSN students.
