Information provided by Mr. Tom Ballard MHSN (Gay Straight Alliance) Advisor
On April 12, 2024, the Middletown High School North Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) observed the annual Day of Silence. On this day, students around the nation participated in a silent protest to show the silencing effect of anti-LGBTQ bias and behavior and to call attention to creating spaces that are truly more equitable in supporting the needs of LGBTQ youth.
To show support for this student-led cause, Middletown High School North students had the ability to pick up and display one of two ribbons. By wearing the rainbow ribbon, students indicated that they took a vow of silence for the school day. The lavender ribbon indicated support for the cause, but does not include the promise to remain silent throughout the day.
The Day of Silence has been recognized at Middletown High School North for well over a decade and a half now. This year featured changes to the organization of the event compared to how it has been conducted historically. Students had the opportunity to retrieve a ribbon at stations located in the Main Office and Media Center throughout the day.
The North GSA is appreciative for the work and support that everyone has done to strengthen the community and foster support for students.
