Calling all heroes! Middletown’s 2015 Relay for Life will take place at North on June 6th-7th starting at 11am. With a superhero theme, Middletown is ready to fight back!
At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones that they lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. Events are up to 24 hours long because cancer never sleeps, so each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times, and games according to themes are hosted by each of the relay teams throughout the night.
There are different types of laps and the schedule varies based on what your committees decide. Here are the types of laps:
Every year, the Relay For Life movement raises more than $400 million and the American Cancer Society puts these donations to work, investing in research in every type of cancer and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers. They are fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer, in our community and everyone else’s. Through fundraising involvement, Relay For Life participants ensure the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society is supported. Volunteers can find fundraising ideas and encouragement through a number of channels on Relay for Life’s website and on Relay Nation, an online community developed just for Relay For Life participants. Each year, the achievements of a number of our volunteers and events are recognized and highlighted through our National Awards program.
Where Does The Money Really Go?
Research: For more than 65 years, the American Cancer Society has been finding answers that save lives. No organization in the US has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer.
Hope Lodge: Where to stay and how to afford accommodations are immediate concerns for cancer patients who must travel away from home for the best treatment. American Cancer Society Hope Lodge facilities provide a free and comfortable place for patients and their caregivers to stay, so they can focus on getting well.
Road to Recovery: Cancer patients frequently cite transportation to and from treatment as one of their most critical needs. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program matches cancer patients with specially trained volunteer drivers.
Look Good… Feel Better: This free service teaches women battling cancer beauty techniques to help them improve their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Volunteer beauty professionals demonstrate makeup techniques, nail care, skin care, and options related to hair loss.
Reach to Recovery: Reach To Recovery support program matches specially trained breast cancer survivors with people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and want to talk to someone who has been there. These dedicated volunteers offer understanding, support, and hope.
Relay for Life is an organization dedicated to making this cancer’s last century, and we can help.
