Most of the world knows how notorious Heath Ledger’s performance as the clown prince of crime was. Now, last year’s Academy Award Winner for Best Supporting Actor, Jared Leto, will be playing The Joker in upcoming 2016 film Suicide Squad.
Unless you are a die hard comic book fan, you likely don’t know what the Suicide Squad is all about. In a nutshell, the group is a team of villains hired by the government to complete dangerous tasks for the United States. The team has already appeared in animated films, video games and television shows, but this will be the first appearance of the group that will be getting a theatrical release. Will Smith will be starring in the 2016 film as Deadshot, a skilled assassin who has also appeared in animated films, video games and television shows.
Some people believe that since Heath Ledger and Jared Leto played similar roles (before Ledger portrayed The Joker), Leto will give a solid performance. But, there are people who believe Jack Nicholson’s performance from 1989 will always be their Joker. Others are stubborn and will only accept one version of the character that they have seen, usually Ledger’s, Nicholson’s or Mark Hamill’s portrayal from Batman: The Animated Series.
Either way, fans should be optimistic. DC Comics is trying something new. It isn’t just the stereotypical hero film anymore. This should be a different side of the DC Cinematic Universe (which also contains Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and all other DC live-action films since 2013 that fans should enjoy.
