This year was a big one for college football. This was the inaugural season of the College Football Playoff (CFP). The Bowl Championship Series had ruled college football from 1998-2013; their rankings committee was responsible for pairing up all bowl matchups at the end of the college football season. But this year the College Football Playoff Committee held that job. Before the CFP there was one championship game played between the top two ranked teams in the country, but this format never really gave everyone a fair shot at a title. With the CFP the top four teams in the country determined by complex computer algorithms would compete in a four team play with two semi-final games being played, and one championship game.
This year the four teams earning their way into the playoff would be in seed order: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State. In the first semifinal game (Rose Bowl) Oregon rolled to a 59-20 victory over the defending champs Florida State. In the second semifinal game (Sugar Bowl) last seeded Ohio State went on to stun top seeded Alabama 42-35 lead by their third string quarterback Cardale Jones. Then in the title game, Ohio State beat the Oregon Ducks 42-20.
This years CFP proved that college football needs a playoff as the 4th seeded team won the championship. with the old BCS system Ohio State would not have even had a chance at the title. Will the CFP expand to eight team next year? We will just have to wait and see.
