Poetry slams are the hot new trends in the art and literature scene and clubs have been hosting open mic nights all over the nation so that one may get up on stage and pour their hearts out in rhymes, no scheme, virtually any format. Two years ago Colleen Hoover published a novel about poetry slams and their hurting and healing processes.
It’s the two year anniversary of the release of Slammed by New York Times Bestselling author Colleen Hoover, and she’s ecstatic to celebrate the birthday with her readers.
These are some personal thoughts on the novel Slammed as well as a summary of the plot that should entice anyone to go pick up a copy.
Following the death of her father, 18 year old Layken’s life is uprooted when she is forced to move with her mother and brother to Michigan. She is heartbroken and lost and finds a way to convey her emotions in an unusual way. Using poetry as an outlet for all of the pain in their lives, people meet weeknights at a club to perform in poetry slams.
Cue 21 year old Will, with deceased parents, fathering his brother. He lives right across the street from Layken and her grieving heart, and together they mend themselves. Will and Layken feel an intense, emotional connection and go on a passionate, humor filled, heart stopping date. Will and Layken had finally found someone that filled the other with a renewed sense of hope. Until disaster strikes once more. Layken walks into her first period class and takes a seat.
In walks Mr. Cooper
Mr. Will Cooper
Will is Layken’s teacher and they find themselves struggling to sort out their feelings while staying on the right side of the law.
As a lover of books, poetry, and chocolate milk, Colleen Hoover had me at “Darth Vader house slippers”. Realistic and profound, Colleen Hoover has brought us on a crazy ride of love and its blurred lines. We are immersed into a world of pain and the all healing powers of “always” because “sometimes two people need to fall apart to realize how much they need to fall back together” (Slammed, Colleen Hoover).
