Almost two years after being officially announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2012, Watch Dogs, the highly anticipated third person action-adventure game, has finally been released just a week ago, and it was definitely worth the wait.
Playing as Aiden Pearce, the player is on a mission of revenge and attempting to right the wrongs of the past after a deadly family tragedy that left him alone and confused as to what happened. Aiden lives in a futuristic, but not so unrealistic version of Chicago. A computer program known as ctOS controls the cities entire technological framework, connecting everything and everyone to a single source. As an expert hacker, Aiden is able to exploit this system and easily alter the technological environment around him.
This produces some interesting and fun situations throughout the game. Aiden can change traffic lights to cause massive car crashes, raise bridges to escape pursuers, deactivate helicopters in midflight, and so much more. As Aiden, the city is yours to control.
However Watch Dogs isn’t just about running around and hacking everything for Aiden’s benefit. It also has a very engrossing storyline, interesting characters with various types of personalities, and fun, unpredictable gameplay. Not to mention the several online multiplayer modes that change up the traditional versions of classic video game matches such as capture the flag and car races. There is also an interesting feature where the player can actually invade another person’s single player game and attempt to hack their person for experience points or in game money. This bridge between the single player and multiplayer world is really fun, refreshing, and keeps the player always alert for potential hackers or threats while they are running around Chicago.
Watch Dogs is an excellent third person action game. One that plays great, looks beautiful on both last and new generation consoles, and has an excellent story that will entertain many for hours to come.
Verdict: 9/10
