Jakeabob”s Bay was a beloved restaurant overlooking the bay and New York City skyline in Union Beach. In was completely destroyed when hurricane Sandy hit in 2012.
Owner, Gigi Dorr, opened a new restaurant called “Jakeabob”s Off the Bay” at a smaller location. This was a beacon of hope for residents of Union Beach and other towns where homes had been completely destroyed.
At the beginning of January, Dorr decided to close the doors of her restaurant on Monday and Tuesday every week and open them as a soup kitchen for people that can”t afford a hot meal (or anyone looking for a delicious bite). She called it, “Spoon Full of Hope.”
Spoon Full of Hope is a pay-what-you-can and completely anonymous place to go and feel welcomed. The wait staff and kitchen crew are almost completely made up of volunteers and the food is made right on the premises.
In March, Jakeabob”s Off the Bay announced that they were not renewing their lease and will be closing the restaurant. However, Spoon Full of Hope will be open up until the end of May.
On March 31, Jakeabob”s last day open, they held a fundraiser to help raise money to get Dorr and her business back to the bay. This was the last day there were door prizes, 50/50 raffles, bands, a silent auction, and great food. There was even a camera man recording everything to send to The Ellen Show.
There is still hope that Gigi and Jakeabob”s will return to the bay, but for right now people will have to enjoy the amazing food and atmosphere of Spoon Full of Hope.
