On Wednesday April 9, nine civic leaders went to Kean University to represent the 50 senior civic leaders and the rest of Middletown North at the Students in Action competition. The civic leaders have been working all school year to increase the volunteer efforts of the school community.
Speakers Abby Russo, Alex Goldfarb, George Roditis, and Doug Bornhoft talked about the events that North has participated in for the community. Civic leaders have volunteered at school events, Middletown Day, and Spoon Full of Hope.
Not only did they volunteer in the community, but they did numerous service projects including Rachel’s Challenge, a giving tree, Teens for Jeans, adopt a family for Christmas, and sending care packages to North alumni soldiers.
The Jefferson award is broken up into two categories: 10 page paper describing the group efforts, and the presentation at Kean. The paper counts for 78 points and the presentation counts for 22.
After the judges tallied all of North’s points, the civic leaders went home with a Silver banner, one point shy of Gold.
