Last week the winners of the 2014 Cupcake Wars were announced. The winning display, “Candyland” along with the dozens of other displays were judged first in the primary rounds by teachers. The kitchen or kitchens in each class that had the best overall display, an exceptional blend of icing, good taste, and so on were advanced on to the second round. The winners of each class were then judged by professional pastry makers and bakers. There were two winners by the end of the second round, one for the A day classes, and one for the B day classes. In the final round the winners of each day competed against one another and were judged again by the professionals, the final winner being “Candyland”
The theme for 2014’s Cupcake Wars was “Out Of This World” however each kitchen wanted to interpret the theme reflected what their display would look like. Each kitchen had to decorate and set out cupcakes into a display, one kitchen’s display was a rendition of Vincent Van Gough’s “Starry Night”, another a scene from “Toy Story 2”. Each kitchen was given a set of rules: Everything must be made from scratch in the foods room, every recipe must be posted somewhere in the kitchen on the day of the competition, and there must be one, movable display from each kitchen that applies to the theme “Out of This World.” Over 40 kitchens competed, but in the end there could only be one winner. Several runners-up were commended by the judges who, while judging and tasting the cupcakes from some of the kitchens were very impressed by this year’s effort.
As a participant of Cupcake Wars I can say in full honesty that it was no doubt a success, both the students and teachers enjoyed the event, and next years classes have a tough act to follow.
