Middletown faced some brutal weather last Tuesday January 21, 2014 when a massive snowstorm covered the entire area with about seven to either inches of snow, depending on the area.
The snow started around 10 A.M. Tuesday morning. Aware of the impending storm, Middletown schools announced there would be an early dismissal for all schools. Unfortunately, the storm already covered a majority of the roads in Middletown, causing massive delays on major highways and back roads as well.
Middletown North Students were dismissed from school around 12:05 P.M. With already two inches snow on the ground, getting home proved to be difficult for many and scary for all.
Ryan Knight, a junior who attends Middletown north, said, “It was quiet a ride trying to get home. It took me at least twenty five minutes to get to my house from the school and it normally only takes me between five to ten minutes on a clear, normal day”.
While the snow continued to fall, the ice also continued to freeze. Temperatures were far below freezing, mainly remaining in the teens for the majority of the day, causing many students to feel very uncomfortable as they attempted to run to their cars and return safety home.
The snow continued all through the night, stopping only for two hours around 8 P.M. and starting back up again around 10 P.M. Many students quickly got the call that school was cancelled for Wednesday, January 22.
Those who work up early the next morning were treated to a beautiful, untouched snow covered ground. January 22 was clear and sunny, however, the temperatures still were below freezing with the wind chill. Many enjoyed a nice, relaxing day inside or shoveled snow for a majority of the day.
While it has been a week since the storm, Middletown is still feeling the effects as some roads are still icy and snow covered, while others have melted away and are safe to travel upon. With Winter only halfway finished, it’s tough to say what is in store for Middletown within the next couple of weeks.
