After their new animated film, Frozen, has won a Golden Globe and earned two Oscar nominations, Disney has announced plans for sending it to Broadway to follow in the footsteps of other films like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.
There is no set time for opening yet. Disney is still in the very early stages of production, but they are working to make it perfect. Frozen is the most successful Disney film in almost 20 years.
The music from the movie, written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, has become a hit. “Let It Go”, sung in the movie by Idina Manzel (Elsa), is everywhere. The movie cast already consists of Broadway stars, Idina included, so the Broadway image is present.
People are going crazy over the music and characters. The movie was released shortly before Christmas and stuffed Olafs – the beloved snowman brought to life – were scarce.
New music? A snowfall indoors? Talking snowmen? An ice castle? There are so many elements to play around with when converting the story from the big screen to the stage. Disney has a lot to think about, but they are sure to please musical lovers after what they did with their other shows.
