In recent news the third baseman for the New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez has been suspended for the 2014 MLB baseball season due to his involvement in the Major League Baseball Biogenesis scandal.
In January 2012 there was a story in the Miami Times that revealed a list of names of MLB players who were getting injections at an anti-aging clinic, Biogenesis. Rodriguez, and well as several other MLB players including All-Star outfielder and franchise player for the Milwaukee Brewers, Ryan Braun.
There were rumors that Alex had taken steroids in his career with the Rangers over a decade ago, as well as during his time recovering from his two hip surgeries in recent years, but there was no valid evidence. It was not until the proprietor of the anti-aging clinic, Anthony Bosch’s testimony that baseball’s case against Rodriguez came to a close.
Bosch had copies or records that proved Rodriguez guilty of seeking and purchasing illegal injections of performance enhancing drugs. Last Sunday, Bosch and the Chief MLB operating officer Rob Manfred were interviewed on an episode of 60 Minutes about the Biogenesis scandal. Specifically covering A-Rod’s involvement, Bosch said during the interview that he had administered six illegal substances to A-Rod, and on several occasions he had injected A-Rod personally.
Rodriguez denies involvement in the scandal and will be fighting the case in hopes of participating in the 2013-2014 MLB season. Rodriguez issued a statement saying, “The number of games (suspension) sadly comes as no surprise, as the deck has been stacked against me since day one.” In the same statement Rodriguez also said, “This one man’s decision…does not involve me having failed a single drug test…and relies on a testimony and documents that would never have been allowed in any court in the United States because they are false and wholly unreliable.”
The future of Rodriguez’s career in New York is uncertain; he is still owed 60 million dollars and has 3 more years left in his contract. However, after drawing negative attention to the Yankees franchise, Rodriguez may not be invited back into the clubhouse with open arms.
