A major concern among students, parents, and faculty alike in the Middletown High School North community is how often acts of violence or other incidents occur and how they are dealt with. Throughout the past few years schools across the nation have been reporting more minor, and major acts of violence many you may have seen on the news.
From information disclosed to the public at the Middletown Township Board of Ed Voting Meeting Agenda on Monday December 16th, the Board released a district tally of the number of violence, vandalism, weapons, and substance abuse incidences in the township so far in the 2013/2014 school year. Total amount of violent incidents this year from september to december is 12, 10 occurring in October, vandalism 0, weapons 2 both in October, and substance abuse 4.
The Superintendent Report on Harassment, Intimidation & Bullying reported at the meeting a district tall of investigations, harassment, intimidation, bullying (HIB) incidents, conflict, and other incidents. Middletown High School North’s discipline page of the student handbook says that, “…all acts of violence or threats of violence will not be tolerated. Students will be disciplined to the fullest extent, which will include exclusion from school, police notification, and a possible recommendation for expulsion.
To record any events of violence or violation of the Code of Conduct, the Middletown District’s policy on surveillance is, “ Both Middletown HS North and HS South have been equipped with electronic surveillance and recording equipment. Any students committing an infraction of the Code of Conduct as observed on these electronic devices will be subject to punishment as prescribed in the code of conduct.”
