After months of hard work, time, and effort, it all comes down to one moment. One test, a couple of essays and a few multiple choice questions all in less than a three hour period. For AP students, this is the moment that they have dreaded the entire year, the AP Exam.
Yet this year, Middletown North is implementing “Project Acceleration”, a program based out of Seton Hall University, involving students taking AP classes to have a second and third option when it comes to the AP Exam at the end of the year.
Previously, students involved in Advanced Placement courses only had one option; to take the exam. However, Project Acceleration allows those students to opt out from the test and purchase as many college credits they want from Seton Hall University as long as they maintain a B average in the class. The credits are transferable throughout many colleges across the U.S.
Additionally, students who choose to purchase credits may also choose to take the test as well, if they truly want to. The credits purchased through Project Acceleration and those credits received from taking the test combine.
Student’s, therefore, are able to receive double the credits, or at least several more credits than they would receive from just doing Project Acceleration or from just taking the test.
When asked whether they were participating in the project, several students, including Junior Sophia D’Alessandro, said, “I am buying the credits from Seton Hall. There’s just way too much pressure riding on this one test, and even though I am still going to take it, it’s really nice to have a backup plan just in case I don’t end up doing so well”.
From the other perspective, Josh Hair, a Junior at Middletown North, decided to not take part in the credits. “I’m worried that if I pay all of that money for those credits and I don’t maintain a B average, then my parents will just think that they are wasting their money”.

The forms to participate in Project Acceleration originally were due on October 22, 2013. However, the date may be pushed back for Middletown North, due to the fact that the school ran out of forms for the students.
