The oxygen levels continue to drop as Medical Engineer Ryan Stone drifts through space with nothing but herself and her astronaut partner Matt Kowalski. They are completely alone and adrift hundreds of miles above the Earth. They have all the space in the universe but they are still trapped.
It was this concept that brought crowds of moviegoers swarmed into theaters this past weekend to take a space flight with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in their brand new movie, “Gravity”, premiering Friday, October 4th and grossing over $55.6 million, according to LATimes.com.
The film stars Sandra Bullock as Medical Examiner Ryan Stone and George Clooney as professional astronaut Matt Kowalski.
The film starts off with both characters and a crew of astronauts repairing the Hubble Telescope, but when wreckage from satellites travelling at hundreds of miles per hour begins to head in their direction, that’s when the trouble begins.
After their station is destroyed and their tethers are broken, Ryan and Matt officially drifting through space. The movie’s entire plot is centered around this event and there attempts at returning to Earth. However, the movie still remains interesting, even with a plot as seemingly simple as this.
Bullock and Clooney both clearly capture their characters. Clooney as the experienced, cocky astronaut and Bullock as the nervous, inexperienced astronaut. Their emotions throughout the film clearly capture these aspects and one particular discussion between the two characters, revealing a major secret about Bullock’s character, brought the audience to tears.
By the end of the film, the audience was cheering and clapping as a result of the miraculous ending. As one of the biggest blockbusters of this month, Gravity is definitely a space flight that should be experienced by all.
