When you walk into the first office in the guidance department, three things stand out right away. The bright orange and purple decorative pillows bounce off the deep navy blue upholstery of the chairs; the picture that reads “Keep Calm and play Field Hockey” and the new face that sits behind the desk with the name plate reading “Ms. Kelly Crist” printed on it in light gold letters. Recently, I was given the opportunity to sit down and interview the newest guidance counselor at Middletown High School North.
Lion’s Roar: So as a kid, where did you grow up?
Ms. Crist: I grew up here in Middletown.
LR: What sports, clubs or extracurricular activities did you take part in while you attended high school?
Crist: Well, I played softball, field hockey and I was on the swim team. I also took part in the March of Dimes, in the student council and I was in the National Honor Society. So I kept myself busy.
LR: Where did you receive your education?
Crist: I went to Rider University where I received my undergrad and masters degree. I received my undergrad degree in sociology, and I received my masters in school counseling.
LR: What inspired you to become a high school guidance counselor?
Crist: Ms. Tarpey played a big influence as she was my counselor here at North back when I attended high school. I always wanted to be a counselor. I love working with people but especially with students. This truly is my dream job. I could not have picked a better career to have gone into.
LR: Did you always wanted to become a guidance counselor?
Crist: I’ve wanted to become a guidance counselor ever since I’ve went to high school here at Middletown North.
LR: How did you end up becoming a guidance counselor at High School North?
Crist: I worked at High School South last year as I filed in for a counselor out on leave and then the full time position opened up at North. So I was lucky to have the opportunity to apply for this position. I grew up in the district. It truly is a wonderful school district.
LR: Now it’s time for the more important question of the interview. What’s your favorite TV show?
Crist: (laughs) I have to say that it’s between Keeping up with the Kardashians or the Bachelor. You know what; I’m going to go with the Bachelor.
LR: What type of music do you listen to?
Crist: I try to listen to a little bit of everything. But I really do like Rihanna and Beyoncé.
LR: An even more important question. Are you a cat or a dog person?
Crist: Oh I’m a dog person. No doubt about it.
LR: For the final question, if you were any animal, what animal would you be and why?
Crist: I would be a bird; any bird that flies and moves quickly. I love traveling and there are many places to see.
In addition to being a new guidance counselor at North, Ms. Crist also finds time to coach field hockey, a sport that she has a deep passion for. Although this is her first year on the faculty rosters at MHSN, Ms. Crist is optimistic about serving and helping her students achieve their goals and help guide them for their future plans.
