Once again, the scaled aviation class at Middletown High School North was visited by a Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter. Landing on the field adjacent to the cafeteria on Friday, December 14th during block 3, the thirty lucky members of the class experienced a once in a life time opportunity to touch, board, and learn about these unique flying machines.
The crew of six gave an hour presentation on the flight controls, the avionics of the craft, as well as describing the vehicles primary function for the coast guar. The pilots explained how their helicopter, which many of us have seen patrolling the waters during the summer along the beach, has a unique role of rescuing and keeping the nations sea boarders secure. With a range of 100 nautical miles and speed of 120 knots, the helicopter was on its way back to base from Atlantic City NJ. Students were allowed to board the Helicopter, step into the pilot’s seat and gain practical knowledge which will benefit their further study of aviation.
