In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many continue to struggle with the devastation caused by the super-storm. With the storm hitting the coast, our community was severely affected. Areas like Pier Village and Seaside were decimated, the roller coast now floating in the water. Atlantic Highlands and Union Beach were two areas hit the hardest. The iconic spy house’s surrounding area is now depressingly bare, it’s once beautiful scenery completely destroyed. The beach itself is very narrow, with very little sand left. Keansburg was also severely affected, with game machines from the boardwalk landing in residents’ yards. Many who chose not to evacuate described the water rushing down the street as similar to a river. New York City was seriously damaged as well. Many buildings were corroded by the salt water and are now under construction. Low lying buildings and shops were completely submerged. Some residents of the city took to scuba diving in the subway tunnels. Things will take long time to get back to normal. School did not return to normal scheduling for a record breaking two weeks. The storm has been recorded as a historical event, the likes of which has never been seen before in this region.
