Like many other high schools across the country, last week was Ally week at Middletown High School North. Ally week which is run by the GSA (Gay straight alliance) advocates support for LGBT students, through violence and bullying prevention programs. Ally week is not only a time for students to show their support for fellow LGBT students but to educate the masses about the dangers these individuals face everyday.
On Wednesday, October 17 members of the GSA including president Stefanie McGowan, Catherine Hill and the clubs advisor Ms. Stevens set up an Ally week table near the auditorium. Students there could receive an Ally week rainbow pin to wear, symbolizing their support for LGBT students and their right to live in a safe and secure environment. Also students/teachers could sign a paper recognizing their support of Ally week, which were then posted on the walls of the school. The GSA had a member posted at the table during the beginning of the day and during block 3.
The GSA, a rapidly growing club at Middletown High School North, currently has 20 members. October, which happens to be LGBT history month, kicks of the school year for the GSA. They begin the month’s festivities with Ally week. The GSA which is a national organization, receives funding from events such as Red bank Pride, which had its first event last year. With their funding the GSA club hosts an LGBT prom in the spring at Middletown High School South, as well as the popular day of silence which takes place in April. Overall, the GSA at Middletown North continues to have a strong and important impact on Middletown High School North as they grow and create a better environment for us all.
