Well, we as a school have made it through September, perhaps the most horrific month of the year. This is an impressive accomplishment by any standards. As Middletown high school North continues its transition to block scheduling, the final step was to eliminate the transition periods during the third block of the day.
With the transition periods ending, and the entire student body free to walk around as they please high school recess is now a more appropriate name to call it. The overflow of students has resulted in closures the library, computer labs packed tightly with students, an almost every computer in the school in use. Moreover, students are more likely to just wonder aimlessly through the hallways with nothing to do. Some students that are involved in clubs and other activities find this time extremely helpful, no longer needing to stay after school.
Many students who previously disliked transition frames are reluctantly calling for their return. They have come to the realization that the current freedom that exists now during the third block, resembles chaos. Attempts to organize the student body have unfortunately been a successful; still, many students in all grades are unaware of their teachers’ transition group times, as well as the opportunities that come along with the third block the day.
With the block scheduling fully implemented, and the original guidelines/restrictions have been eliminated, it has reinforced the belief of many seniors that the problems in the school would be solved if they were allowed to leave school grounds for lunch. However, that seems unlikely to ever occur. All in all, Block scheduling and the experiment which is the 2012 – 2013 school year will definitely have its issues. I hope that school officials continue to make changes to the school day. Therefore, Middletown High School North can have a more ideal school day.
