While Others Hope to Soon Forget
The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI. Fans across the country were waiting anxiously for the game to be played, and it did not disappoint.
A majority of North’s students are Giants fans, so they were thrilled with the outcome of the game. Junior Tom Nitti, a huge fan of the Giants, playfully tweaked the Patriots by saying, “It was too easy for us (the Giants) in the first quarter, so we let them come back because we felt bad, then we made another comeback. Let’s go Giants!”
While Nitti and other Giants fans in the school were rightfully celebrating, a small sect of Patriots fans in the school were not.
Junior Paul McCartney represented Patriots fans and tried to maintain a positive outlook by saying, “I was upset after the loss, but I soon realized that the Patriots will contend every year as long as Tom Brady is the quarterback and Bill Belichick is the head coach.” Paul noted that this loss was especi
ally tough because the Giants also defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2007, so it was like a ‘nightmare all over again’ for him.
While Giants and Patriots fans had a vested interest in the game, North students who are fans of the New York Jets tried to keep their distance from the game. It was quite a predicament for Jets fans, as the team’s two main rivals are the Giants and the Patriots. This made the Super Bowl unbearable to some Jets fans, including Junior Paul Petrucci, who said, “I was rooting for the Patriots so I wouldn’t have to deal with Giants fans. It was just an awkward game.”
The Giants and their fans were the true winners of the game, as Patriots and Jets fans did not enjoy the experience and wish to quickly forget it. North’s Patriots and Jets fans walk through the hallways trying to ignore the boasting of Giants fans and the sea of player’s jerseys, which does not look like is going to stop anytime soon.
At least until the first Giants’ loss of next season.
