Video Game Reviews: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Opening in the land of Skyloft, a floating town set peacefully between
the clouds, Skyward Sword begins with our usual protagonist, Link. He is an his closest friend, Zelda, reside in the utopian society, unaware of the dangers that await.
Shortly after the story beings, Zelda is swept up by storm, which drags her to the land below. No one in Skyloft has ever been below the clouds; most believe there is nothing there. Link then embarks on his mission to rescue his dear friend.
The game scored a 10/10 as its official IGN rating. I definitely would have to agree, as its visuals are stunning; they take on a water-colored appearance. The wii-mote movements are about as realistic as it gets. But be warned, a wii-mote plus remote or attachment is required to play this game (I learned that the hard way on Christmas morning).
If there was one thing I would complain about regarding this game it would be that it was easy. And by easy, I mean a little bit too easy. As soon as I purchase a Zelda game, I know it’s going to be a commitment; long hours of frustration (in the water temple) are one of the many things we all love about the franchise, right?
I mean, Ocarina of Time (a previous Zelda game) led to broken controllers, as well as broken dreams, but I think we all agree that that’s what makes a game satisfying. I wish I could say that Skyward Sword did the same, but it didn’t. I went through the game play with little frustration (something I wasn’t expecting at all).
Before you think this is a quick play through, Skyward Sword has a lot of game play hours, which is always a good thing. As well as this, it pieced together a lot ideas displayed throughout the other games, such as where Link’s iconic green tunic came from.
Skyward Sword mixed up some classic patterns. Rather than following the usual forest, fire, then water outline, it followed a new pattern. While it was sad to see certain traditions being broken, like Zelda not being a princess, it was refreshing to see the Zelda team go out of their comfort zone. These are just a few of the new surprises featured in the latest Legend of Zelda.
Where the game lacked in certain areas, it made up for in others. Skyward Sword deserved its perfect score of 10/10; as with any Zelda game, you can always notice the quality in the game. With that, I can say Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword lives up to its name.
4.5/5 Stars
