Freehold Township– The Middletown North Lions had a second-half comeback to defeat Freehold Township, 21-3.
Facing a 3-0 deficit at halftime, the Lions never gave up hope and fought back by scoring three second-half touchdowns. Quarterback Cody Thompson led the charge with a rushing touchdown along with a passing touchdown to junior Nick Welsh. The touchdown to Welsh went for 55 yards and was a pivotal moment in the game.
Running back Joey Racioppi put the game out of reach with a 10 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He has had a stellar senior season, providing a needed spark for the offense.
The win came in a Shore Conference Class A North game, and improved North’s record to 3-3 on the season. After starting the season with an 0-3 record, North has seemed to gain momentum and their three game winning streak has kept hopes for the playoffs alive.
Along with hopes for a state playoff berth, the three game winning streak has invigorated hopes for a division title. These were both stated goals at the beginning of the season, and it now looks as if these goals may become reality.
