Through 4 weeks of theatre time, Wicked has made approximately $525 million dollars at the global box office, enough to become the highest grossing broadway film adaptation of all time.
The movie follows two enemies, Glinda (‘good witch’ played by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (‘wicked witch’ played by Cynthia Erivo) who strive for the same thing: mastery in sorcery. They unfortunately, in their case, get put together as roommates at Shiz University, where a majority of the story takes place. Elphaba is frowned upon for her green skin color, allowing Glinda to gain a large amount of empathy for having to room with such a nuisance to the school.
Glinda and Elphaba eventually reach friendship, and together travel to the Emerald City for Elphaba to share her powers with the Wizard of Oz where conflict prospers from there…
The enemies to friendship plot line is everything and more in this movie. From the flying monkeys, to the addicting movie soundtrack, this broadway adaptation about friendship, empowerment, and equality lives up to the hype for all theatre geeks.
