As 20th Century Fox and Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have combined forces into Deadpool and Wolverine, this hit movie released on July 26 to raise Marvel from its ashes and bring young and old fans together in a cinematic experience of action-packed fun and adventure. The movie has brought in over $1.3 billion worldwide and has been deemed a huge success.
The movie Deadpool and Wolverine follows Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, whose character originates from his first two movies Deadpool and Deadpool 2 within Fox’s Marvel Universe. The rights to this universe have now been bought by Walt Disney Studios to obtain the characters within the 20th Century Fox Marvel franchise, such as Deadpool, other X-Men, the characters making up the Fantastic Four, etc.
After being kidnapped and brought to the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Deadpool breaks the fourth wall and is given the opportunity to be transported to the big universe known as the MCU (owned by Disney) as Deadpool is informed that his own universe, the Fox Universe, is actively dying since the anchor being who helps keep the universe alive has been killed. It is discovered that this anchor being is Logan, also known as the Wolverine, who was killed in the hit movie Logan (2017) and was a key leader of the X-Men.
Afraid to leave his friends and found-family behind, Deadpool tries to find a new anchor being to support the Fox Universe in order for the universe to remain stable, and he looks for this by finding a variant of Wolverine within the many worlds making up the full multiverse to substitute in for his universe’s Wolverine.
Deadpool stumbles upon the Wolverine variant deemed to be the very worst in the multiverse, and the two team up to try and stop the TVA from killing the Fox Universe and a new villian Cassandra Nova trying to kill even more universes, while also trying to repair the damage of the found Wolverine’s universe as he has made quite a few mistakes within it.
Spoiler alert, Disney spares no expense in using their character rights to bring in fun cameos engaging young and old fans in this new movie. Older characters from the Fox Universe such as characters from The Fantastic Four, Logan, and more are brought into the movie for a nostalgic feel and to pay homage to the storylines that have built up Fox’s Marvel Universe until its conclusion. These nostalgic characters play a key role in helping the plot develop and bringing even more action to the movie. Other familiar faces such as Happy Hogan from Disney’s MCU are in the movie to connect to the current state of Marvel and thread Deadpool and Wolverine into the new phase of the MCU.
To be prepared for the storyline of Deadpool and Wolverine, it is important to watch the first two Deadpool movies in order to have a clear understanding of Wade Wilson and how important his found-family is. It is also important to have at least some understanding of the Fox Universe, so it is suggested that one watches (at least) the first trilogy of X-Men movies, the movie Logan, as well as the original movie The Fantastic Four. If the TVA is unfamiliar, watching the first season of the Disney+ show Loki would be very helpful.
As of now, Deadpool and Wolverine is the second highest-grossing release of 2024 globally, as it is closely behind Inside Out 2. The movie has reached the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time globally, and is the 21st highest grossing film in any genre of all time. It received $211 million in just the opening weekend, and fans are excitedly seeing it second and third times from how exciting the movie is. The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 78%.
Overall, Deadpool and Wolverine is an exhilarating movie for new and old fans of Marvel. It brings humor and action with also a more serious side in certain parts, and has an amazing soundtrack to keep the audience engaged. Deadpool and Wolverine is now available to rent or buy on digital.
