Friday, April 19, one of the world’s best-selling artists, Taylor Swift, released her eleventh studio album titled The Tortured Poets Department. Following 2022’s extremely successful Midnights, Taylor Swift announced this recording at the 66th Annual Grammys on February 4, 2024 during her speech for winning Album of the Year.
Two hours after The Tortured Poets Department’s drop, Swift surprise released a second part of the album, The Anthology, which adds 15 tracks with 4 bonus physical tracks to the existing 16-song track list.
The double album consists of synth-pop, folk-pop and intimate poetry with largely mid tempo songs. Produced and written by Swift and Jack Antonoff, the opening track and lead single, “Fortnight” features American rapper Post Malone and English indie rock band Florence and the Machine on the track “Florida!!!”
After just a day of the release, the album broke a string of records globally as it topped the official charts in 13 countries. It gained the highest single-day streams for an album on the streaming platform Spotify and surpassed 1 billion streams days later as well. In the United States, The Tortured Poets Department sold over 2 million albums in its first week, the biggest sales week of Taylor Swift’s career and became her 14th number-one album.
