Pink Friday 2: A Party Continued

PF2.  That was the glimmer of hope for millions of people around the world, a hidden message sent by a major artist in the music industry.  The sender was Nicki Minaj and the receivers were her fans.  To them, PF2 could only mean one thing, Pink Friday 2, a sequel to Minaj’s debut album, Pink Friday and, after three years, their wait was finally over.  As of December 8, 2023, Pink Friday 2 is out and available on all streaming platforms.

While we all saw Pink Friday 2 coming, nothing could have prepared us for such a euphonious breakthrough in music as a whole.  The entire album boasts an incredibly unique and modern sound, taking advantage of the bubbly nightcore-infused beats that have charted more and more with the rise of Ice Spice with the song “Everybody” (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) and “Pink Friday Girls” (feat. Cyndi Lauper), while still keeping the spirit of the original “Pink Friday”.

In an interview with Vogue, Minaj remarked, “When I look back at a lot of my music, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, where’s the me in it?’” but she is certainly back with this album.

“Pink Friday” always stood out for its very bubbly and cute vibe, something  missed by fans in the 12 years since its release.  While it’s not for everyone, it’s something the fans have clearly enjoyed, with ecstatic fans declaring it as the start of “a new era in music”.  The sound of the whole album is far less generic than her last few studio albums.  It’s back to the pop-rap subgenre that Minaj ruled in the early 2010s. It’s an album unapologetically infused with personality.
