The Folk Of The Air Series (3): The Cruel Prince Review

“Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.”

In a world of faeries, pixies, merfolk, hobs, and trolls, Jude Duarte and her two sisters struggle to live in Elfame as humans, still years after they were stolen from their murdered parents. With her hopes of becoming a knight, Jude stands out amongst everyone else as a mortal, ultimately earning herself a handful of enemies, one being prince Cardan. With set determination, Jude takes fate into her own hands, dancing a deadly tango with power and royal politics.

Desperately and stubbornly trying to fit in and find her place in Elfame, Jude cunningly deceives, betrays, and fights to assume her position. Will Jude consume that power or will the power consume her?

These fantasy novels follow Jude as she wrestles to become the warrior she dreams of being and that alone was one of my favorite aspects of the book. After being knocked down and bullied for years, Jude has stood her ground and because of this, she is a very strong female lead throughout the series. Another element that was enjoyable was the dynamic between Jude and Cardan.

They are both very complex characters who have good chemistry. The only thing that was difficult about this book was following the details about Elfame politics and the names of the characters (there were a lot). The books are uniquely dark and are well written. In the final analysis I would rate this series an 8/10.
