And So It Begins…
The 2017 school year begins to pick up pace towards the ending weeks of September, a perfect time for Seniors to begin the stressful, dreadful, yet exhilarating college application process.
Both Mrs. Fiore and Mr. Kostas in the guidance department ensured that students not delay the task and get prepared and begin, if not have already started, their applications to colleges.
Wednesday September 20, during the students’ transition periods, a meeting discussing the usage of Naviance and Common App was held, open and mandatory to all senior students.
Attendance was taken at this meeting and shortly after, a packet guide to navigating the two linked online application websites was handed out. The front page consisted of a checklist to guarantee that students are properly and orderly going through the steps to their applications.
The rows of seats in the auditorium filled with students anticipating the final notes of the assembly, however, the questions they had during only continued to grow throughout the day in their mind.
In the weeks following, guidance will be calling down and scheduling appointments with senior students to meet and discuss their college applications so far including, what majors they would like to pursue, what colleges they intend to apply to, and a worthy mention during the presentation, their teacher recommendations.
When asked their opinion of the meeting, many students felt that it had helped them and reminded them of the extremely tedious process they have yet to endure, or parts they had forgotten to do. A few students simultaneously agreed that it made them anxious and, for some, nervous with the long checklist that awaits them.
The overwhelming tasks made known by Mrs. Fiore and Mr. Kostas were in the best interest of their students and thoroughly and efficiently explained and examined the aspects of the websites that students had not yet started or finished. The two counselors provided explicit detail of the step by step construction of the bridge to college.
