Even though many see April 1st as the opening day for MLB, there was a game Sunday night between the Texas Rangers and new American league foe Houston Astros. At home bearing a new logo the Astros defeated the Rangers 8-2 at home. The majority of teams opened on Monday including the local Yankees and Mets.
On opening day in the Bronx and in Flushing two New York teams with cross town fan bases began their seasons. The Yankees, the most expensive team in sports, fell 8-2 to their storied rival the Boston Red Soxs. Across town there was no sulking just jubilation as the Mets clobbered the San Diego Padres 11-2 behind a makeshift lineup.
Other notable headlines were the 2-0 victory by the Washington Nationals on two solo home runs by Bryce Harper. The defending World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants lost 4-0 to the L.A. Dodgers. The Atlanta Braves opened up their season without Chipper Jones on the team and the brother outfield duo of B.J. Upton and Justin Upton.
