Lost in the chaos of Hurricane Sandy was its wrath to schools, both physically and internally. Due to the massive storm, teachers and schools are now two weeks behind and, with block scheduling in place, the lost time is critical. Teachers are being forced to create new lesson plans while trying to squeeze in the grades lost.
Trying to figure out how the school is going to deal with the time off, honors history teacher Mrs. Murphy spoke about her plan to make up lost time. She said “I feel like I can drop their lowest quiz grade and fit in a small project”. Mrs. Murphy did say that the storm and the election were to things that could be discussed in class. In the short term she feels that she’s rushing to catch students up and block scheduling has had a negative effect. For the long term Mrs. Murphy says that it’s a wait and see approach but things will be fine. Mrs. Murphy said “the storm this year with block has made it far more difficult than if it were normal scheduling.”
Overall there has been a major struggle for teachers to get back on track. Ultimately there may be no way to make up all that was lost or get as far as planned.
Without a doubt the road to recovery will be tough not just on the streets but also in the halls.
