10 Tips for Preparing for Quarterlies

Alex Lehotsky

It’s nearly the end of the marking period, people, and that means it’s time for quarterlies, everyone’s favorite time of the year. Here are ten tips to help you prepare for these killer tests.

  1. Start studying a couple nights before the test. This will eliminate all of your that last-minute stress when studying right before an exam. This will also give you an opportunity to study a little more bit each night.
  2. Find a comfortable, quiet place to study. Try studying on a couch or your bed. Even your floor works. Studying at a desk can get uncomfortable and straining over long periods of time.
  3. Cancel out all distractions. Turn your phone off while studying. Do not have the TV playing in the background. Doing all of this can keep you on task for longer periods of time.
  4. Play soft, mellow music in the background. This will set the mood and keep your mind and body relaxed. Also, use headphones while listening to music; doing this will cancel out any other distracting noises.
  5. Make study guides and flashcards. It will condense the amount of material you have to review and make studying much easier. Flipping through a textbook is very time-consuming so study guides and flashcards will make your review quicker.
  6. Take breaks. After every hour of studying, take a ten minute break to relax, check your phone, etc. Let your mind rest.
  7. Get some fresh air. Taking a step outside can clear your head and reduce your stress.
  8. Eat healthy snacks. Nourish your brain cells by eating some fruits and veggies. Drink lots of water, too. Refrain from caffeine and sugar.
  9. Chew gum while studying. It is proven that chewing gum while studying can help you process facts more quickly. Also, if you chew that same flavor of gum before or even during the exam, it can jog your memory and help you remember the information you studied.
  10. Get a good night’s sleep! You don’t want to take a test while falling asleep. Be sure to get some extra rest so that by the time tomorrow morning comes, you’ll feel alive and ready for your quarterly.
