This summer was an abnormally great season at the movies. A wide range of movies hit the theatres, ranging from documentary to action to sci-fi and adult comedy. As in every summer movie season, there were some noticeable duds as well. Cowboys and Aliens underwhelmed critics and underachieved at the Box Office. This was not the most case for most movies; usually they entertained one way or another.
Trying to pick one movie as “The Summer’s Best Movie” is almost an impossible task; however a few did stick out as worthy. The first movie that I saw and said “wow” to would be the J.J Abrams directed Super 8. Abrams is known for his works with sci-fi and production of shows that make the viewer look beyond the screen and into a deeper meaning. Super 8 is a monster movie that connects on all levels with the viewer. The characters’ desire to create a homemade movie fuels their actions, and creates some amazing scenes. The monster in the movie has an innocent feel when his true desires are discovered. Super8 was my favorite movie of the summer, albeit only slightly over my second favorite.
The next best movie of the summer was a blockbuster movie that delivered on its high expectations. Captain America: The First Avenger was an awesome movie that was well written and acted. Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers proved his range as a performer, and solidified him as a lead actor. Steve Rogers was a small man with a big heart. When he was given the chance to help his country through the “super-soldier experiment,” he was more than willing to help. His transformation into Captain America gave audiences an incredible movie and an excellent lead in to next year’s The Avengers.”
If you missed either of these movies, make sure to catch them on DVD or Netflix when they are released. Overall, it was a great summer for movies.
